..::TIP::.. Did you know (save your Kindle battery)…

One time, when my Kindle Keyboard was my main Kindle device, I thought my battery was deteriorating, so I called Kindle Support at Amazon and asked the if they could replace the battery. They looked at what I had on that Kindle, and the guy on the phone said “you have a hundred and seventy samples on this device?” [I can’t remember the exact number, but it was near 200.] I like to download samples of kindle books, and then I like to keep them to remind of books I might want to buy.

Well, the guy at Kindle Support told me that that was what was killing my battery. The more books and samples you have on your device, the more the device is checking with amazon for updates. Kindle books sometimes have updates, I guess to fix typos and things like that. And so since I had many books on my kindle plus almost 200 samples, my poor device was talking to amazon constantly and draining my battery. Now, what I’m not clear on is if it was just the samples that caused this or the full books, too. I may just call Kindle Support to double check and then update this post. But that was a real eye-opener for me, and I figured I’d pass on that little tidbit for you.

UPDATE: I dug around a bit; it’s the indexing process for each book and sample book that kills the battery, not checking for updates.

..::TIP::.. You don’t need a Kindle to read a Kindle Book.

A lot of times I hear “but I don’t have a kindle”.  You don’t need a Kindle to read a Kindle book or even a free sample of a Kindle book.  Amazon does offer many great Kindle reading devices, but they also offer other ways to read.  You can download free software so that you can read Kindle books on your computer, smartphone, or tablet by downloading the apps here.

appsForKindle2

You might say to yourself “oh, I’d never read a book on my PHONE!”, even I once thought that.  But you’d be surprised how many books I have read entirely on the Kindle app for iPhone before I got my first Kindle device.  Another thing that is nice about all this is that all the devices and apps that you have sync up using what is called “WhisperSync”.  So you can be at home reading on your iPad w/ the Kindle app, go off to wal mart, and while stuck in their hellish checkout line, pick up where you left off at home in the Kindle app on your iPhone and then read a little bit to kill some time.  It really is awesome.
